Free writing software with perfect cross-platform sync (phone & PC)?

My life is chaotic (in a good way!). I write on my desktop at home, on my lunch break at work on my PC, and on my Android phone while waiting for appointments. I need my manuscript with me everywhere.

My biggest headache is finding free writing software that offers seamless, reliable cross-platform synchronization. I've tried using Google Docs, but it feels clunky for creative writing and the app isn't my favorite. I need something with a decent mobile app for typing (or even just voice notes!) that syncs instantly with a desktop app. I'm willing to use a combination of a writing app that saves to a specific folder, which I then sync with Dropbox or Google Drive. Has anyone successfully hacked together a perfect workflow for this?
