I need to decode something my advisor said because I genuinely don't know what she meant and I'm too embarrassed to ask her directly.
I'm a 4th year PhD student in clinical psych. My dissertation is on trauma interventions in refugee communities. It's a lot - literature review, methodology, IRB approval, data collection (interviews), analysis, discussion. I'm in the data analysis phase right now and I'm STUCK. Like, analysis paralysis stuck. My results aren't what I expected and I don't know how to interpret them or frame them for my discussion chapter.
I met with my advisor yesterday and she said, very casually, "Have you considered working with a dissertation coach or a writing consultant? It might help you move past this block."
And my brain immediately went to: is she suggesting I hire someone to write it for me?? Is that a thing?? Do grad students do that??
But also... maybe she just means someone to help with structure and accountability? Like a writing tutor but for dissertations? I genuinely don't know what's normal anymore.
I'm stressed because I have a fellowship that requires me to finish by next fall, and if I don't, I lose funding. So the pressure is REAL. But I also don't want to do anything unethical. I've worked too hard to get here.
For other grad students: what IS a dissertation coach? Do they just help with editing and structure? Or do they actually write content? And if they do write content, where's the line between "helping" and "cheating"? Like, if they help me phrase something better, that's fine. If they write a whole section, that's not fine. But where's the line??
Also, has anyone used one? Were they helpful? How do you find someone legit and not just a scammer? I'm in a specific field so it needs to be someone who actually understands qualitative research and trauma studies.
Any insight would be so appreciated. I'm navigating this alone and feeling lost.
