Can someone please explain what is a thesis statement in plain English? I'm so confused!

Okay, I'm going to be completely honest here and risk sounding like the dumbest person in the class. 😳 I'm a second-year university student, and I have written maybe 15 essays so far. And you know what? I don't think I've ever actually understood what a thesis statement is supposed to be. Every professor says "make sure your thesis is strong" or "your thesis needs to be arguable," but when I Google examples, they all look like fancy, complicated sentences that I could never write.

Here's my problem: I tend to write my essays like I'm telling a story, and I sort of... reveal my main point at the very end. Like a mystery novel! 🕵️‍♂️ But my TA just marked down my last paper hard and wrote "WHERE IS YOUR THESIS?!" in red ink. I feel so defeated.

Can someone please explain to me, in the simplest terms possible, what a thesis statement actually IS? Like, if you were explaining it to your younger sibling? I've heard it's the "main argument" or the "roadmap," but what does that look like in real life?

If you have a great example from your own work that really "clicked" for you, I would be SO grateful. I really want to figure this out before my final paper is due! Help a confused friend out! 🙏
