I always thought tone was just 'formal' or 'informal.' Then I stumbled across a list of tone types and my mind was officially blown. There are dozens! Formal, informal, optimistic, pessimistic, joyful, sad, sincere, hypocritical, fearful, hopeful, humorous, serious — and that's just the beginning.

In fiction, you might use a suspenseful tone in one chapter and a tender tone in the next. In nonfiction, you might be authoritative in one section and encouraging in another. The key is making sure shifts feel intentional, not accidental. My creative writing professor explained that while tone can vary, there should be an overall consistent tone for your piece.

Now when I write, I actually name my intended tone at the top of the page ('hopeful but realistic' or 'curious and reflective') and check each paragraph against it. Such a simple trick, but it keeps me focused!

Elsa, right?! The first time I saw a list of tone words, I was like "wait, there are NAMES for all these feelings I've been trying to describe?" 😂

Here's what helped me understand tone:

It's not just about what you say – it's about HOW you say it. Two stories about the same event can have completely different tones based on word choice, sentence length, and what details you include.

Your "name the tone" trick is brilliant. I do something similar – I write my intended tone on a sticky note and put it on my monitor. When I'm revising, I check: does this paragraph match the sticky note? If not, something's off.

Also, your point about intentional shifts is key. Great writers can move from humorous to serious, but it has to feel purposeful, not accidental. 🎭
