What exactly IS a dissertation? I'm supposed to write one and I'm confused. 📚

I'm in my third year of PhD and I'm supposed to start my dissertation soon, but honestly? I'm not even sure what a dissertation IS. A guide from Tuskegee University says it's a "lengthy research paper written as a requirement to earn an academic degree" that proves your knowledge and contributes "new research to your field" .

Whether you earn the degree depends on "the quality of your paper and how it is presented" . No pressure or anything. 😵
 
My committee chair told me: "Your dissertation doesn't need to change the world. It needs to prove that you could change it if you wanted to." That reframed everything for me. I was so paralyzed by the idea of making a huge contribution that I couldn't start. But the dissertation is training. It's the first real research you do independently. It's okay if it's not perfect. It just needs to be done and defensible.
